Consider Everything an Experiment

For this project, we were tasked with designing three unique advertisement spreads based on 10 Rules by Corita Kent. Each spread was required to include all of the original text from the poster. The first design was meant to closely mimic Corita Kent’s visual style, while the remaining two spreads explored entirely different aesthetics. The goal was to push ourselves creatively and experiment with new approaches, ensuring that all three final spreads felt distinct from one another.
For the first layout, we were required to closely follow Corita Kent’s visual style. I approached this by incorporating themes of religion, reflecting Kent’s identity as a practicing nun, while also referencing her commitment to social justice through symbolic imagery. Her work is known for its use of bold, primary colors and expressive, hand-drawn elements, which heavily influenced this design. I integrated hand-drawn lettering to write the word “rule” throughout the background, creating texture and depth through layered compositions. I also experimented with overlapping elements and intentional font changes, particularly when text crossed the yellow background, to emphasize contrast and visual hierarchy.
The second spread allowed for complete creative freedom, with the only requirement being the inclusion of the 10 Rules text. This prompted the question: how can text be meaningfully incorporated when it doesn’t naturally align with the visual style? To explore this, I leaned into traditional art influences and spontaneity. I created ten original, on-the-spot characters in Procreate and placed them on a textured sketchbook paper background. The layout is designed to feel like a page of class notes filled with doodles, handwritten elements, and visual experimentation. This spread highlights my ability to quickly create engaging, playful characters while emphasizing creativity, flexibility, and a sense of fun in the design process.
The third spread focuses on themes of observation. Repeated eye imagery symbolizes awareness, perception, and the act of truly seeing, reinforcing ideas of focus and self-guided discovery. A cool, muted color palette creates a calm, contemplative atmosphere, while soft circular forms help structure the layout without distracting from the text. Through restrained color, static composition, and carefully angled typography, this spread emphasizes discipline, curiosity, and experimentation, aligning with the reflective nature of the 10 Rules while presenting them in a more modern, conceptual aesthetic.
